I have installed a 1984 subaru gas tank were the spare tire used to be on my 54 panel, fit's great.I know the sending unit is working ,but the gauge itself won't,i can get the gauge to filcker a little if i give it full ground but that's it.I have tryed a universal gauge and that works fine,it has a hot a ground and a sending unit wire, the 54 gauge has only two contacts.Having a bit of trouble understanding it all. I have tryed two 54 gauges that i know were good when last used
and get the same result.

Should there be any continuity between the gauge and the housing that holds it?
Help !!!
Len

The ohms ratings are most likely different between the '54 and your donor. Go to an aftermarket site and find out how many ohms the stock sending unit has then measure the ohms on the Subaru unit.

12v or 6v electrical system?

original tank sender (adapted to work in your tank) or later 12v Suburu sender?

If 12v system and Suburu sender and original 6v gauge, you might have a gauge-voltage problem (a runtz-style resister is recommended by many people), and the ohms-rating of the sender does not match the that needed/expected by the gauge (as posted by 5wests).

12 volt system, 12 volt suburu sender and i assume the gauge is 6 volt. Yes i have the runtz resister on there 12 to 6 volts at the gauge, and sorry i forgot to mention that.

Thanks Len
