The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop 1954 Flywheel Alignment

Hello!
I am in the process of bolting up a 1954 chevy powerglide transmission to my 1954 6 cly and having problems with the alignment of the flywheel. Converting to a 12 volt system so I have a 160+ tooth flywheel from a later model 6.
Now I need to line up the "X" on the flywheel with the "X" on the torque converter when I bolt them correct. My problem is my flywheel does not have the "X" stamp on either side of it. I cleaned the flywheel up really well and still no luck in finding the stamp on either side. Now there is a triangle and timing marks on the flywheel facing the engine - how can I determine the correct flywheel position or will it not be a big issue?
would appreciate some advice.

Hy 54Chevy_Guy, as far as I know the flywheel will only bolt on in one way, also you can bolt the torque converter up any where that all the holes line up, hope that helps.

Yep you are correct - the flywheel to crankshaft will only bolt up one way because of the arrangment of the locating pins. The flywheel to converter will bolt up in all directions. Thanks for the follow up. Now to finish the install =====

just a quick follow up on my flywheel alignment issue. I failed to mention that on the transmission side of the flywheel there was a dab of white paint which I was a bit puzzled about and dismissed. Seemed odd until I read the 62 service manual which states that there is a white paint "stripe" on the heavy side of the flywheel that should be aligned with the blue paint "strip" on the torque converter when reassembling the transmission to engine. I must have a flywheel from a later model chevy. Luckly I made note of where it was>
