We have the old girl sort of up and running. We have to prime the carburetor to get it and then it runs fine once it's going. Once it is warmed up it will start without being primed about half the time, the other half we are priming it. We want to send it out to my father inlaw for the summer so he can drive it, but we aren't comfortable doing so unless it starts properly. Any help or suggestions are welcome.

Nice truck. The accelerator pump in the carb is probably bad. Those carbs are real simple to work on. If the pump is not working get a kit & give it a minor o-haul. If you are not comforable doing it yourself find an old time mechanic to do it.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

You're the second person to suggest the accelerator pump so that's probably the problem. I am very comfortable putting a kit in it, but is there an accelerator pump in a rebuild kit? aren't most of them just gaskets and a needle valve?

Thank you for all the complements on the truck. It has come a long way in the past 10 years. When we started it had a tree growing through the box and today it is winning awards. My father in-law has carpal tunnel syndrome in his wrist from writing cheques for this truck but he is very proud of it also, so I guess it was worth the effort.

The accelerator pump MAY be an issue, it may not be. They are very easy to test:

Replacing an accelerator pump that isn't bad is not going to solve your issue.

Jon.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air
The most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify.

The accelerator pump was bad, the carburetor was filthy and there was a ball valve jammed so far back into the plug that it wouldn't come out and had to be replaced. The springs were also worn out. I purchased a used carburetor for $20 and used those springs and the plug for the power valve. Now you just touch the starter and it fires right up. it's amazing how good that old truck runs.

Once again, thank you gentleman for all your help. Now we have to tune, tweek and adjust everything so a 78 year old man can drive this truck everyday like he did 56 years ago.
