Okay, I am spoiled at this point. Whereas before the resto, a rattle here or twenty more there, whatever. Now, my shifter rattling is bugging me. I have a rebuilt SM420 in my '50. Cuising along the shifter rattles. Is this just a function of a top loaded four speed, or is there something that can be looked at to fix, (short of putting baseball cap on it.)

Highway truckers put an insulator sleeve on their shifter to quiet the noise I'm thinking about, which is from inside the gearbox and changes frequency with truck speed. Your transmission might quiet down after it has been in service a while.
