I checked out a 235 thats sitting in a 1956 GMC half ton, however I was unable to locate the block casting numbers (despite hanging upside down with a flashlite for a long time!). I was able to get the head casting number (3835913) which tells me its a 1954 235 head, and I was able to locate the engine serial number (C295894)but I can't find anything that deciphers this. Going back to look again is not an option (it was a 5 hour round trip), so can anyone advise what (if anything) the engine serial number indicates? Here are some pics

I can tell you that it has provisions for both center side and front side mounts. That would make it a 1958 or 59 engine.
It is also possible it is a later crate engine.
I can almost make out the casting date above the starter.

Hy Stephan, the water pump is lower than the top of the block, so that means it is a 1955 or newer engine. It doesn't have any "captains bars" above the starter, so it is probably a 235, and not a 261, hope that helps.

i have a 53 chevy 210 sedan with those 2 captains bars on the engine,and its connected to a powerglide trans from the factory (trans is factory),looks like the motor may have been changed obviously,but the engine mount towers bolt right up,i was told 261 engines came later,but need to verify this of course i scratched the serial number near the dist and came up with ""LAQ 380I32 and number near the starter is con1 G 10 3 can anyone help with this decipher thankyou

Many of us learned from a post a few months ago that some 1953 235 engines had those "captain bars".
