For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 99 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 99 | First, my truck is a 53 Chev 5100S COE. I have two small flat plaques, top of the dash between the radio and windshield that I am trying to identify and refill with the original message. I read somewhere that they originally contained directions for the use of the 2 speed rearend, PTO or maybe even both. Does anyone know, and if so, how about a snapshot so I can duplicate. Thanks, in advance. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,960 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,960 | If it once was a military or government vehicle, that is where the their vehicle number would have been. If it has an electric Eaton 2 speed, Eaton supplied a tag. The same tag would have been used on a Chev as a Ford, etc. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 33 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 33 | Could one of them be this.... 2-speed rear plaque | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,548 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,548 | Hey GeoRichards, 5100S COE is a 15000lb. gvw 1 1/2 ton COE. That's a "RARE" truck you have there. Most were 5100 16000lb. gvw 2 ton COE's. The "S" denotes special order 1 1/2 ton. Got any pictures of it you can show. I used to own a '53 Chevy 5100 COE 2 ton road tractor. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 99 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 99 | I'll get a pic or two posted. I may have mispoke though, because I did think it was a 2Ton. It's the short 110" wheelbase, and currently has a 3 yard St Paul dump bed on it. I'm bringing it back from the dead, and it's a slow process, but God Bless the hot dry desert in this State of AZ. This one sat in a field beside the road for 25+ years. I'm sure in most places it would have just rusted away. As it is, it's going to be just fine. I'll post a pic or two and you can tell me, maybe what I've got. Thanks. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,548 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,548 | The 1 1/2 ton 5100S will have 15000lb. gvw, on the ID plate in the driver door jamb. If it says 16000lb. it's a 2 ton. You can't tell the difference in them by eyeballing the two. Looking forward to seeing it. I've owned close to thirty GM COE's, the past 25, or more years. I commented on your seat question in the interior section also. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 99 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 99 | 2 ton it is. Sorry for the mis-information. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 99 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 99 | I love the decal, and will get one, thanks. Who knows what was originally in the little windows screwed to the dash. It was once a fleet truck owned by a Transport Co. and may have been, as suggested, inventory control numbers of some sort. Thanks to all who responded. I apologize for not including pictures yet. I'm just old enough to not know how without asking my kids. I will get them, I promise. | | |
