I am installing a rebuilt 235 in my '46 6400. It has the following sequence adjacent to the distributor: FII4B
and there is also this: con 3 A 139
It is the 3764476 block which could have been made in several years so really only for my own education can someone tell me what any of the rest means. I know the F is Flint but I am not finding some of the codes defined.

Looks like you have a '59 Passenger 235, originally hooked up to a Powerglide. Appears to be a January 13 1959 casting date, with a January 14 1959 assembly date. If it is still running the original or stock replacement cam, it should have hydraulic lifters.

Thanks, actually it came out of a 1948 6400 truck. I had the block checked out and
machined. It will be put in my '46 6400 with solid lifters. I reused the cam which was in excellent shape. My biggest question now is: did you get that detail from the
3 A 139 on block? If so, please explain how the code works or point me to where I can understand this stuff. You see, I thought the B in the code by the distributor indicated the block being a truck block. Just trying to understand. Thanks so much.

CON 3 supposedly means Conveyor #3

A 13 9
A = first letter in alphabet = first month = January
13 = day of month
9 = 1959 (the 1949 235 engine is different and there was no 1969 235)

Will you be using new solid lifters? Maybe someone will comment on a recommended break-in procedure?

TIm, Thanks. Since this engine was rebuilt at some previous point in its life and was pulled from a '48 truck I don't think I am doing anything too "out there." I have put it back together with copious amounts of assembly lube and am planning on running Joe Gibbs oil in it for the first 500 or so. Any additional tips from you or anyone are sure welcome. Okay, and now how about the other code by the Distributor? The F is Flint, what about the II4B??? If this indicates the "build" date as
January 14th then what does the "B" indicate? Blessings to all,

"B" is the application code. In this case, Passenger car with Powerglide transmission.

I belive the info Longbox gave you is correct. Did it have hydraulic lifters in it?

I would be concernced about running a new set of solid lifters against a hydraulic cam, (if that is the original cam) as I understand it you could be in for a short cam life. Do a search here for "hydraulic lifter cam" and you'll find quite a few threads on the subject.
