Is there an off the shelf exhaust dampener I can buy to settle down the noise from the exhaust pipe on 216 engine? I'd like to mount it on the end of the tail pipe. Would it cause any harm to do so?

Look for a resonator with the same size pipe diameter as your exhaust system.

I think he means exhaust "Resonator", as K10 posted, to mellow out the tone of the exhaust. ohwell

Exhaust Dampener is used for HVAC: http://www.comfortgurus.com/images/BD05-main3-FAM.jpg

Exhaust Resonator: http://www.automotive-online.com/gifs/diagram.jpg

Super Trapp makes these to go on the end of the tailpipe, but they are very expensive. http://www.supertrapp.com/product_sections/cat.asp?CatID=32

How about telling us what you are running for exhaust now: tailpipe size, muffler type, full length to rear bumper or ??? Adding the correct muffler should be all that is needed, and will be much more reasonable in regards to pricing. thumbs_up

OK folks, I think I've got my terminology wrong. I think I'm looking for a resonator as previously mentioned. Something I can clamp onto the exhaust tip. Lucille is a stock '46 with a 216 engine and has a 22" long 5" round muffler. The tail pipe is 1 3/4" OD. The distance from the muffler to the end of the tail pipe is 58". All I want to do is to quiet the exhaust noise down a bit. I don't want it so sound like a fart machine. Just a low rumble. Is that possible? And I don't want to spend alot of money to do it. If there is such a device what is it and where can I get one?

whatever you find out let me know, I put duals with cherry bomb looking mufflers and it is mellowing out some but in the higher RPM ranges at full throttle it is positively obnoxious. (high rpm and full throttle being relative terms here)
