I did a visual inspection of the gap between the shield (3656502) and the plate (3657522) and it looks like they are touching. I shoulda clamped them and the rubber cushion in a vice to check the gap before we installed the mount like the Tech Tip recommended. I'll know more next week.
>> QUESTION: One side of the plate has a lip that turns down. Which side of the mount should the lip face? It was on the engine side when we removed it, so we put it back that way.

most likely place for an oil leak to develop would be at the front crank seal meaning if oil
got past the shield it would probably end up more towards the front. The back of the
mount is well under the front plate. Also the stones, mud water and other debris would be
thrown up from the front and it might offer a little extra protection. A cut away
illustration of the mount is in the FAM, section 6 sheet 12 and it appears that the curved
edge is towards the front.
Amazing how something as simple as a rubber motor mount can cause so much agony
isn’t it!

They are not to be tightened all the way down. That can remove the gap, hence the earlier talk about cotter pins versus friction nuts on those bolts. Shop Manual description

The rubber cushion may be thinner than the original '54 cushion. I may need to file/grind a little off of the top of the retainer. (?)

I recently bought a NOS: PLATE, Engine Front Mounting, Group 0.004, part number 3709945 (1954/55st). It differs from the 37-53 plate by having a 2 3/8" cam hole vs the earlier (1937-1943) 2 1/4" cam hole.
It has a nut (no washer) on each of the two bolts. The bolts seem to be as Denny described above: with respect to the heads and how they are attached/pinched to the plate. The slot on each side-face of the nut comes down about 1/3 of the height of the nut. There is a 1/16" slot and it is over to the right of each of the six side "faces".
