I have a '55 1st series truck that has been converted to 12 volt. The truck does not have a horn. The other day, I sure could of used a horn. It is time I install a horn. There are no wires in the truck for a horn. There is not a wire in the steering column. I want to put a seperate horn button on the dash or under the dash. I want to know what is required for putting in a horn, horn relay and horn button.

Here is how I would do it.

Dale

I forgot to put in an inline fuse between the light switch and the horn relay. I would guess a 10 amp one would work.

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

Larry -

I had a difficult time remembering where or finding the horn button on the few cars that I have driven that had the button mounted under the dash.

Most parts houses have everything that you need to hook up the horn button in your steering wheel hub. Here are parts at Classic Parts of America ... not recommending CPofA over other suppliers, but they are easy to link to.

'54 MPC Horn Contact Illustration

The '54 - '55 1st horn was mounted "on brackets between radiator core and grill". The low note was the standard horn. High note was extra cost option.

Dale's schematic is good.

Here is the way I hooked up the horn on my 12v '54. Suggest bypassing the ammeter as shown on my diagram because the current draw of the horn may peg the needle.

This is the 1954 factory wiring diagram.

Good luck with your new horn.

Bought a horn, relay and push button. Tried it out today. It works. I appreciate the input.
