I have a '54 3100 shortbed with a '47-'50 rear axle and brakes. They are the Huck style brakes. I want an operational parking brake and I have all the components except for the cable that goes into the rear wheel drums. Years ago, a guy told me that I was missing a part on both wheels for the cable to connect to. In the shop manual, it refers to a "toggle lever" but I have not been able to find anything like that on any parts website. Jim Carter has a "Park Brake Cable Clip" part no ME168. I am wondering if this is the part I need and if so, where does it connect. I have searched high and low for some kind of picture of the inside rear drum that shows the parking cable connected but cannot find one. Can anybody tell me what I need? Pictures would be great, thanks!

It might be best if you posted a picture of what you do have, this will make it easier for the bolters to figure it out. Here is a picture of what I think you're missing. brake parts

Thanks for the reply Tim. Those parts look interesting and I can see where the lever could possibly attach at the top of a brake shoe and then when the cable is attached to the bottom of the lever and the parking brake is applied, it would push the shoe against the drum and set the parking brake. But I don't know where the start part would go and are these levers for one side (meaning two levers per side) or is it one lever per side? I have attached a few pics of my right rear drum for what it is worth (yes I know I have a leaking wheel cylinder...another problem I am working on). Right now, there is no cable going in to the drum, but when I get one, it will enter the drum at the bottom right and I believe it should connect to something at the bottom left. It is really puzzling why I cannot find any diagram of how the levers you sent a pic of would attach to the brake shoe and I have looked everywhere I can think of.

Anyway, any help would be great. It would especially help to see your parts actually on a drum. Any idea where I can find those levers? Every scapped (junk) truck I have found seems to be missing rear drums.

Thanks,
Larry

The brake parts I showed are for the Bendix style system. One bracket for each side,a left and a right.
I don't know if the Huck system uses them or not.For some reason,I was thinking you are converting to the Bendix type brakes.

Do you have Bendix on the front ?

I don't have any pictures of the Huck style,Denny Graham has a 3/4 ton with Huck style, but it looks different than a 1/2 ton. Dennys 3/4 ton

Maybe a monitor can move all of this to the drive line forum, you would get all kinds of help there.

Tim,
Thanks for the help, I believe the pics you sent from Denny's truck explain everything. According to the 48 - 51 shop manual, the rear brakes for the 1/2 and 3/4 ton seem to use the same parking brake lever and I can definitely see that lever set up fitting perfectly on my truck. Yes, I have Bendix on the front and I wasn't planning on converting the rear to Bendix unless it can solve my parking brake problem at the same time and it seems to me that finding the parking brake levers you show in your picture are just as hard as finding the ones for the Huck unless you know otherwise?

I'll check the drive line forum and see if I can get help there.

Thanks again!

Brakes are not considered part of the driveline and they are regularly discussed here. No need for double posting.

54Forever: I have the same problem, mine a little bigger since I have all the system, including the pedal gone. Anyway, the dilema you have is what puzzles me more, where does the cable connects to a lever to open the pads. I wrote a Thread in which I posted pictures of the rear axle without the pads. You can clearly see the hole where the cables go to but no additional lever, except for the four that grab the friction pads. The picture shown of the 3/4 ton is not the same as 1/2 (you can check that on you parts book). Not that I'm glad you are on this predicamente, but it sure feels good I'm not alone with that problem. We will very glad if somebody could post a picture, as Danny's, but from a 1/2, it would mean the world to me, and I guess you too. Here are the photos again. Rear brake pictures Thanks

Hy guys, I found a picture in a GMC parts book of the light truck Huck parking brake, I'm not 100% sure they are the same on Chevies, but the picture still might help you to identify what is missing from your brakes, hope it helps.

3B: If I was dumber, I could run for President/senate. Now that I saw your picture, take a closer look on my parts book and the drawing is right there.

Thanks, I think I'll go for there. 54Forever, if you need the parts number, send me a PM and I gladly post them, if the forum allows it.
