Howdy everyone. I have voluteered to assist Peggy with publishing the Tech Tips that have been submitted. As a part of the process I will be placing queries in the various forums looking for details and/or fact checking.

Today I'm looking for info on clutches and Bell Housings. A tip was submitted where the writer discussed installing a T-5 tranny. In his case he was adapting the transmission to replace a SM420. The bell housing and clutch he used were out of a 55 1st series, though he isn't sure if it was the orignal or had been swapped at some point. It had a 10 3/4 inch clutch with a 10 spline clutch disc.

What I'm trying to find out, is bell housing typical for AD trucks running the sm420? While I know that in earlier years the 10 3/4 clutch was only used on 1 tons (I think it had something to do with the torque tube design?)would later models use the 10 3/4 clutch as well?... Do lighter trucks with 9 or 10 in. disk still have the same 10 spline disk and bellhousing arrangments?

Any inputs will be appreciated.

Thanks

They all use the same 10 spline disc & trans bolt pattern in that era. When you put in a T-5 you need a 14 spline disc. You canuse whatever pressure plat it came with. The last one I did I am useing the original S-10 9 in. clutch disc with the larger pressure plate. It is in my 56 with the 235 engine. It is working real good. I plan on putting in a V-8 engine this year & I will use a larger clutch.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

I don't know if it helps but the bolt pattern that the T5 uses started in 1948 in trucks, 1955 in cars.

Thanks for the good info guys. When I work on these tech tips I want to make sure (to the extent I can) that they state years and models they may be applicable. Once it is finished, I'll post it here for review and inputs.
