STOOP!!) Hubby wants to put a 5spd man. trans. in it. Is this a possible swap? Its a 1971 4x4 suburban with a 350... If this is possible can yall send me a link to a site that i can get info/pruchase?? Thanks GUYS!

Does it sound like its screaming at 55 after driving my outher rigs (all with overdirves & higher gears)? Yes it does but it will run under load at 75 all day long. Is this a 'burb a K10 or K20? Does it have a manual transmission now? Might still have ratio tag on front axle cover bolt.

The rear isnt winding out. It's the tranny slowing it. I honestly don't know the rpm. No tach. But it's seems to be pacing at about 3500+ at 60. 25-3000 at 55. And 70 it's a high 4500. I believe it's got 3.63(?) rearend. It's a 1/2T.

With the Suburban being a 4x4, you'll have to deal with adapting the transfer case to whatever transmission you end up using. You'll need both the correct adapter case and output shaft to connect them. Another option would be to find an early '80s GM 4x4 truck with the MY6 4 speed, which has an overdrive 4th gear. You'll want to find one with the NP205 transfer case, which will be the same as what you have. The issue you're having now, though, is not the transmission, it is the rearend gearing. Higher rearend gearing would be one way to fix it (3.07, 3.73, and 4.10 were the common options), as would an overdrive transmission. Both will change the final drive ratio.

As I remember Advance Adapters can help you swap to a NVG3500, not going to be cheap. Might be more cost effective to swap axles to 3.07 if the transmission in it works for you.

What I decided on and bought is the NV4500, a 5 speed OD box that has a reputation for being tough as nails among the 4X4 set. They aren't cheap and they require a special gear oil at $28 a quart but the .73 OD makes it all worth while for me. You'll still have the bull gear first when you want it, 2-4 for around town, and OD for the open road. NV4500s are found in mid '80s to mid'90s Dodges and late '80s to early'00s Chevys in 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive models. The Chevy 4X4 version is probably the most common and should be a bolt-in for you. Yes, the 205 T-case will bolt right up.
best wishes,
