For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 835 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 835 | I recently installed a new double acting fuel pump to replace my old and tired fuel only pump. I bent up a new gas line and vacuum lines from straight sections of brake line from a nearby flaps. All went pretty smoothly. I had a question as to how to plumb up the vacuum lines, here is what the factory assembly manual says: Fuel pump page from factory assembly manual. And here is a picture of the pump: New pump. The line that goes to the windshield wiper motor is on the right, the one the arrow points to, the one marked "in", This is consistent with what the Factory Assembly Manual indicates. Here are a few pictures of the pump installed on the '53 Powerglide engine in my '51 burb. Engine RH side. Fuel/vacuum pump closeup. Fuel/vacuum lines at carb Enjoy! I want to redo my fuel line and that looks really good. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 | I really like how the dual pumps help the wipers but, they have a bad habit of disintegrating the shaft seal. This allows engine oil to be sucked into the intake manifold.

I used 5/16 inch line for the gas, which was the same size of the original line. I used 1/4 inch for the vacuum lines.
I did use flare fittings. I made the flares with one of those inexpensive flaring tools. I practised three or four times on a piece of tubing until I got the hang of it. I mounted the tool in a vice. Making a good 90 cut is critical, and de-burring and bevelling the tube before making the flare is also very important.

Any idea of how long the shaft seal lasts?

On the Chev the wipers would stop on acceleration like there was no booster pump. The owner had just bought the truck so I am not sure how much oil it used.
