I have a t-5 (WC) transmission hooked up to a 235 chevy. When I drop in high-gear (5th) I get loud "grrrr" noise. It goes into 5th gear smooth. When I give it substantial pedal or take foot off of gas noise goes away. The loud noise occurs uder constant steady or slight accel/deceleration. I use ATF. Any insight would be greaty appreciated.

You've got a bearing problem, either the input or output shaft bearing in the ends of the case, the cluster gear bearings, or the "pocket bearing" where the two shafts meet in the center of the transmission. If it makes noises in 1,2,and 3, as well as 5th., that's also a sign of input/output bearing problems. The gears are not loaded heavily in 4th, because the power goes straight through instead of taking a detour through the cluster gear. This makes 4th. a much quieter-operating gear.

great, thanks for your response. I have the problem only in 5th gear. I just found out it is a NWC (not world class) and should require gear oil. I think it is a bearing or a wrong 5th gear set? The builder who is across the country wants me to record the sound and email to him. We'll see...

It's a rebuilt unit? There's a possibility a replacement gear, either the cluster gear or the 5th. output gear, has teeth that are not ground at the correct angle. It would be necessary to know what parts were replaced during the rebuild to make a more accurate diagnosis, or a teardown and inspection.
