I bought a 3/4 ton eaton rear end out of a 72 chevy that I am going to swap third members with a 50 1 ton to get 4.10 gears. The 72 axle has wider brakes than the 50 does. Is it possible to swap rear hubs on these axles? I would also have to swap backing plates and the entire brake assembly.
The outer bearing # is B11630 and the inner bearing # is O11784 on the 72 axle.
I have not torn into the 50 axle yet but I have an interchange manual that says the outer bearing # should be B11630 and the inner # should be D11786.
The outer bearing # matches.
Or, should I just weld spring mounts on the 72 axle and use the entire axle?
Thanks

I believe the difference in numbers is the difference in bearings BEING the early ones have barrel type(shape) roller bearings and the newer ones have tapered rollers.

If you haven't done so yet, measure the housing length. You should find the newer housing is 3.5 inches longer. I have thought about the swap, but haven't been able to justify the expense of narrowing the housing.

My 68 C-20 has barrel shaped roller bearings in the full floating rear hubs. I just measured a rear axle cut from a 50 Chevy 3/4 ton panel. The full floater axle measured 63 inches between the two wheel mounting flanges.Seems a little wide?

If they're both Eaton, yes. There are some Dana rears out there. You should be able to swap the pumpkin if you want to keep the original width. It would be worthwhile to see if the brake & hub assembly will swap out. Take em apart and see what happens.

Thanks guys,
Later in the spring (when and if the snow melts) I will try the hub swap. If the hub works, I might be able to use the original axles. I'll post my results.

Make sure you guys are checking the measurement on the axle shafts left-to-left,and right-to-right
One side is 31&1/2 inches. One is 37&1/2 inches.
