I bought a Mustang gas tank for my '38. The guys at NPD told me I couldn't use their sending unit for the Chevy gauge. They claimed I would have to buy a sending unit to match the fuel gauge.

Is there any truth to this?

If so, what sending unit should I look for?

Ford used a range of 10 ohm to 70 ohm (or there abouts...some say 12 to 75) prior to 1986. Your '38 is most likely a 0 ohm to 30 ohm gage.

I have not tried to match gage to sender, so I can't help you there.

I read somewhere that it will work, but will only show 3/4 tank when full - due to the ohm issue Soyuz008 brought up. Don't know though? For more ideas look at: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1052846-mustang-tank-under-bed-questions-1955-a.html and http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...a51a01739963d3b&t=396325&page=2 and http://www.trifive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21578. Good luck, when you figure it out let us know please, because I have to address the same issue at some point. Thanks.

0 to 30 ohm.

I have a 1980's Subaru tank installed on my 54 ,it has a single wire sending unit. I didn't know there would be an ohm issue to deal with.
What i'm getting from all this is that it won't hurt anything to go ahead and try it.

it probably won't hurt anything, it just won't work with the original gauge .... there are 'universal' sending units available at most FLAPS in various resistance ranges, including the 0-30, which might be fit to the non-stock tanks ...like this on ebay
