A buddy of mine got this at the swap meet and doesn't know the specific year. Looking at the pics in the gallery it appears to be a '54 or '55.1 emblem. It's stainless. Am I correct? <CLICK>

Were some of them pot metal?

That is the style of the 54/55 Chevy truck hood front emblem. No 54/55 hood front emblems were pot metal - they were mostly stainless steel. However, there were two versions of that emblem, but the differences were subtle.

The 53/54 hood side emblems and the 55-1st hood side emblems (different styles) were chromed pot metal.

I had a 55.1 3600 from 89 to 92 http://www.stovebolt.com/gallery/brown_franklin_1955.html
but this pic does not show the side badge very well, but it is the same as the NAPCO 3800 you have a picture of except it reads 3600. Definitely a unique item for that partial year model.
Thanks Tim for the 55.1 3100 emblem listing. I don't think anyone is reproducing 3600 or larger series emblems.

I can only find four 3100 emblems from 1955-1st series. I'll have to wait for warmer weather to see if I have two 3600 or 3800 55-1st side emblems. After reading the posts above, my guess is that I might have 3800 emblems from a 1-ton panel truck.

1955-1st 3600 side emblem, another view of one in Denny's album?

If memory serves the 55 1st series side emblems were the only things different from the 54.

Open driveshaft on all 1955-1st models (the 1954 1/2 ton still had a closed driveshaft). Thus, different 1/2 ton transmissions, rear end, and rear spring mounts.

Painted-grill color changed from exterior color in 1954 to all-white with black inner-bars in 1955-1st. The inner-bar color of the chromed grill was white in 1954 and might have been black in 1955-1st?

I'll have to clarify regarding inner grill-bars. The 1954 inner bar color was Thistle Gray for most body-colored grills. The Commercial Red body color supposedly bled through the Thistle Gray, so it's inner bar was painted Aluminum (I do not know if Argent Silver was another name for this).

In 1954, the chromed grill inner-bar color was white.

calm down fellas, wrench obviously meant the only emblems that were different were the side ones - Denny is the one that prompted you to sidetrack the thread Tim wink

One person's clarification becomes another person's smokescreen (or, visa versa).

Once again, just to be clear and correct with the proper names of both paint colors: the 1951-st painted-grills were indeed mostly Bombay Ivory, with Onyx Black inner bars.

As I posted above, I do not know if the inner-bar color on 1955-1st chrome grills were black (maybe Onyx Black) or a white color (Bombay Ivory or Pure White).

NOTE: an upper-case letter at the front of a color indicates a proper name, (an official GM color-name). The PPG and DuPont paint codes for most of these colors are in the Tech Tip.
