I'm new to this forum. I just picked up a 62 Chev with a 235 and 3 speed manual. The speedo wasn't working when I got it and I found the driven gear was missing from the transmission. Of course it was extra long and a tough one to find.
Anyway, now I've got it all working, but in the morning, when it's really cold, my speedo makes a horrible whining sound and the needle goes crazy - up to 100 and down to zero and back.
Anyone got any ideas what's going on and how I can fix it?

There's several of them that offer discounts to Stovebolt members. I had to replace the one in my '55, I seem to recall it was around $100 for a new speedo head. That did include the odometer, needle, and high beam indicator.

Just from my quick search of 4 of the companies, only 2 list your speedometer. Seems it's only available as a reman, and it's around $200. Jim Carter was the higher of the 2, with no mention of a core, American Classic has is for about $15 less, but charge $50 if you don't sent in a core.

This works every time for me to calm a jumpy speedo.

I have found the best way to thoroughly lubricate a speedo cable is to spool it up and drop into a pan of ATF or clean motor oil and let it sit overnight. After a thorough soaking & wipe-down, install it. You won't have the objectionable noise any longer. | | |
