I'm working on installing an aux. transmission on my 46 GMC COE and this brace "rod" is in my way. It runs from a frame crossmember a couple feet behind the cab to the transmission. What is its purpose? Can I run without? I haven't seen it on any of my other big bolts, but they have been newer.

Hy Jrpontiac, that rod is there to try and resist torque from the trans/engine, an old GM engineer once said "Parts left out cost nothing, and cause no service problems, so if we put it in there, you can be darn sure it's doing something." Go ahead and remove it to do your "brownie" installation, then see if you can't find a place to re-install after you have the "brownie" installed.
