I have heard that a classic volkswagen product can change 6volts to 12 volts(inverter) in order to run 12v items(radio, stereo) but staying with the traditional 6v for the vehicle. Has anyone seen this or have done this

Voltage booseter cubes are sold by most of the vendors and
online at a bunch of sites. Usually run about a hundred bucks.
I've been using one to power my Sony 12v radio and 12v tach for
about six years.

Here's one with a little more "oomph"? As with the other style, there is a 6v + or - ground to 12v - ground version available.

Would any of these inverters be good to run a 12v wiper conversion?

Lets correct this since it seems to be an on-going thread, an inverter is an electrical
device that converts direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC).

What we are dealing with here is simply a DC voltage booster to kick the 6v up to 12v.
One of the small cubes has been powering my Sun Pro Tach and Sony CDX GT420U
AM/FM/Compact Disc player for five or six years now and I’ve never blown a fuse.
Although the radio is capable of 52w x4 I’m not trying to drive a four component speaker
system with that much power. I found a pair of cheap 10 or 15w speakers that will slip in
the door that supply plenty of volume. I’ve got no problem hearing talk radio, the oldies
stations or big band music from a CD while I‘m cruising down the road at speed.

But I agree it won’t supply enough power to drive a wiper or heater motor and if you were
trying to drive some big honkin‘ 100w speakers you would no doubt be blowing fuses
with it.

thanks to all the ideas, however I have found a posting that lead to Newport Engineering that advertises a booster to handle the load of a wiper, for those that are interested here is the link

Good link for someone wanting a higher output converter. I find it interesting how they call it an "inverter" in the title but the description correctly calls it a "converter".

Piggy-back dual generators. That's simply awesome. Well, not simple I guess.

no idea about the availability of the parts Tim, I just have that booklet saved for the diagrams and lists - note also that there's some early "AC generator" [alternator] info in it [1958] including a Delco 6V alternator headscratch

Chris - having the circuit diagrams with it does make it fairly simple, just be a chore to fab the mounting hardware, a good Denny job grin I've been considering adding a 2nd alternator to my bus, just need to have it switchable so it isn't robbing HP when not needed

Denny,

If you make the 6v/12v mounting hardware, I'd be please to test it out on my COE.
