Hi guys I have a 58 3600 235. I bought a new fuel pump cause th old one was a leaker. I have never put one of these on and I dont want to screw anything up. Got a little nervous when the instructions started talking about making sure the cam shaft was in the correct location. Any tips for me

Pretty simple. The only issue I've discovered with the camshaft is it can be difficult to get the fuel pump mounting bolts started if the lobe is at it's high point relative to the pump lever that rides on it. If that's the case just turn the engine a bit so the cam turns. I've found that even with the lobe in the "wrong" position it's not really that difficult to get the bolts started. I get one started (not difficult) and draw it down enough to get the other started.

Hey Tiny, First of all I think I am going to change my Profile name to "I dont know anything about Stovebolts" Anyway I took my new fuel pump out to the truck and it is about 1/2 the size of the one on there now. The old one has a whole lower section with a tube coming out of it and heading up the side of the motor in through the firewall. My guess is this is a vacuum line for the old wiper motor. Does that make sense and if so I assume I can just install this new one without the vacuum as I dont have a vacuum wiper anymore

Yeah, if you don't have the vacuum wipers anymore, it won't matter at all. I'm sure when you removed the wipers, you plugged the hole in the intake manifold right?

Actually Mr Lang when I bought the truck there was no wiper motor at all. I installed an electric cause I couldnt find a vacuum style. I have noticed there are a couple of hoses with screws stuck in the end of them. I have been assuming these were vac hoses but was afraid to touch them cause I dont reallt know what they do. It sounds like you have a double-action fuel pump, which is also a vacuum pump. The original pump is single-action. You probably got the proper replacement single-action pump.

Ahh, well, the rubber hose will more than likely be from the 'ol vacuum wipers. There is a fitting on the intake manifold, where the rubber hose would connect. You can plug this with a 1/8" pipe plug, brass is nice, as it comes out easy if you ever want to instal a vacuum gauge, or connect some other vacuum accessories, such as an ash tray, or fan, or Southwind Heater, etc.

There will be (should be) a small steel vacuum line that runs from the carb, to the vacuum advance on the dizzy.

Ok getting down to it this thursday. Please coeerect me if I am wrong but does the arm on the pump ride on an egg shaped cam OR is there another arm on the egg

The arm on the pump rides directly on the camshaft lobe.

Sorry to sound dunb but is the lobe the egg?

The lobe that I am talking about is I think what you are calling an egg.

it is the only thing in that hole that you would most likely be able to see. It is actually round but off center. (at least on the two cams I have laying around.)

One more question. Am I suppose to put any kind of glue on the gasket

No need for anything on the gasket, but if you need something sticky to hold the gasket in place while you align everything, it's okay.

Well gang, I got it in. No problems but no thanks to the instructions. The diagram on the instructions would have you try to put in on upside down. And no I am not kidding. Thanks for your help
