Hey so this is a simple question im sure, but i cant seem to figure it out.
How do you remove the lock mechanism (just bought a new one) from the glove box door in a 1954 3600 chevy?

I also dont have the key to the original glove box lock but it is in the open position. I can push the lock button in.

One screw on the inside , remove the retainer bracket, then it pulls out from the front...

Unfortunately, the lock on my glove box is different then yours. Guess i should have posted a pic first.

Looks like the screw is missing... It might be just rusted and stuck... Try something like WD-40 on it, wiggle it around and see if it will push out from the back...

Agreed, it looks like the bracket is missing. It should just come out the front. Maybe someone in the past used an adhesive to glue it in place since they were missing the bracket?????

This is the diagram for the glove box lock from the '29-'54 Master Parts Catelog.

The diagram near the bottom of the first column on this page from the Truck Shop Catelog shows a "RETAINER" that is similar to the one on your lock. I don't see that retainer on the MPC diagram and I don't see it on my '54 glove box lock ... unless it is behind the front chrome escushion and hidden inside my glove box door. It's been a while since I had the lock out. That "RETAINER" may be jammed into your lock opening and holding the lock in place.

When you finally get the lock out, you will need a '54-'59 Glove Box Lock Retainer (#54-04507 on the Truck Shop catelog page), and a '54-'59 Glove Box Door Lock Gasket (#54-04505). They are available from most suppliers.

You will also need a 6-32 screw and lock washer to hold the retainer to the lock. Doublecheck the screw size. Don't overtighten the screw. The lock is potmetal and will break or strip.

If the spring on the door hinge is not broken, remove the door and play with the spring on the hinge so that the door will pop open by the spring loaded hinge when unlatched. You should feel spring resistance when closing the door.

Just got back out to the shop. With a little more elbow grease the lock assembly popped right out the front.

Looks like Tiny and Lonnie were right. The bracket that may have been there originally was just missing. You can see where the screw in the back would thread into it. Wonder why that would dissapear?

My '54 lock does not have the retainer that is pictured on your lock. I removed the lock from my glovebox door today just to make sure that the retainer is not hidden between the front and rear sheet metal of the door. Your retainer in the Truck Shop Diagram, and Bruce said that he as a couple of locks with the same retainer.

How did you remove the retainer on your lock? What secures it to the lock?

And yes, it looks like your lock is set up to use a retainer like Truck Shop #54-04507.
