I have a 1947 1/2 ton truck with the floor shift 3 speed transmission, 216 engine. Today I drove the truck and could not get out of 2nd gear without the transmission shaking enough to drastically shake the parking brake lever. Could it be the engine mounts that are bad at the bellhousing?, or do I have a bigger problem? Yeasterday the truck drove fine and early this morning no problem. Kind of just all of a sudden type thing. Thanks for your input. I am going to check the bellhousing engine mounts since I have not changed them since acquiring the truck and the ones on it have sat for over 20 years

That is the first thing to replace. Those mounts are pretty flimsy. They always need replaceing. You will have to raise the engine a little to get to the bolts. Make sure the bolts holding the trans to the engine are tight.

Thanks. I have the driver side done. What a pain in the you know trying to get the bottom bolt in and out going into the bellhousing with an open end wrench.

Ends up just out of curiosity after replacing the motor mounts at the bellhousing I open up the enclosed driveline and see to my amazement that 2 bolts holding on one side of the ujoint have backed out and the other side broke into 3 pieces but was still bolted in place holding the driveline.

While I am on my hunt for the part I need, what is the term for the ujoint retainer cap called that the two bolts go through?

Are you replacing the u-joint?
Or trying to repair the used one?
If the latter, I've got a moderately used one you can have for parts. I bet it would fit in a USPS $5 flat rate box if I took it apart.

I see Jim carter has one new for $43.00 and retaining clips for $3.00 each. Only problem is I wont get it till next week. I am going to check a few local places tomorrow. If I cant find it I will let you know.

New used dont matter to me but wanting it now is my main problem

And I'll check and see how worn the one I have is.

I checked the used one I have. It's worn but still serviceable.
If I take the crossbar apart it'll fit in a small flat rate box ($5.50). But it'll still be at least mid week before it gets to you.

I went today to desert valley auto parts and Brian hooked me up with the parts I needed. I came home and cut a strip 5/8" wide out of a gmc Jimmy hood I got from a neighbor and I made my own straps with the tabs to go around the bolts. Tomorrow I will assemble it back together and keep on driving. Thanks for looking Leon.
