Have any of you guys installed a gas tank inside the frame ahead of the rear on a TF 3100? If so what tank did you use, what's it's capacity and how did you handle the filler neck?

I know about the Rear Mount Tanks and In The Bed filler caps and I don't want either of them.

I know there is an S10 tank that might work, but I'd like to here what others have done/used...

the TF panel/burb has a frame mounted tank that fits in any other model - many have used them for pickups over the years so it may be hard to find one!

When using a Burb tank do you also use it's Fill Neck?

I think having the fill neck exposed on the side of the bed above the bed running board will look period correct. Kind of like the way it wae on the old Willys Jeep Pickup trucks.

Any other thought's on how to put this together?

the burb filler goes in pretty low and level so it's not very noticeable inside, just a slight lump at floor level, so you might make that work .... just have to find a usable tank and it's attachment straps and fill tube and bolt it in

I used a 1969 Mustang gas tank. Remove the rivets from the rear crossmember, and remove it to allow the gas tank to slide between the rails. I had to trim about a 1/4" off of the bottom "C" channel of the frame, but it worked out awesome. Ultimately I ended up welding a frame out of angle for the tank to screw to. The Mustang tank top originally is used as the trunk floor. It screws down around the perimeter of the tank with metal screws through the tank flanges.

I am aware of the behind the axle tanks with the in the bed fillers, but I want to keep the spare tire under the bed and have room behind the seat for a tool bag and radio speakers.

I know there's an S10 tank that might work, but I haven't seen one yet to see how good of a fit it is. Any of you have this set up?

I like the idea of using a Burb/Panel truck tank...need to see if I can find one of those.

I just got a 55-59 Suburban Gas Tank and am taking it to Chem Strip to be cleaned and de-rusted tomorrow.

I did a quick dry fit and so far I like the way it's going to fit. The tank fits around all of the crossmembers. The only issue is how to make the filler neck work. I don't want to re-use the cab filler as I want ALL of the gas piping out of the cab. I will be going to the junk yard next week to see what's available. I'm not against having the fill neck exposed above the right side running board similar to the late 40's Willys/Jeep Pickup's.

Hey Mike do you have any pic's to share for this?

The tank is back and looks new, it cleaned up great.

I still havent worked out the filler neck. The wife and son don't want the filler neck exposed like the old Jeeps (too much pipe exposed).

I'm going to install a Retrax retractable bed cover www.rolltopcover.com which will take up about 11" square at the front top of the bed. So now I'm thimking I could run the filler pipe exposed inside the bed. I can fit the filler neck below the area that the cover is taking up running it on a 45* angle through the bed side wall. This will make the gas cap/filler neck look about the way it would look in the stock location, but it will be on the right side between the fender and the cab on the bed side.

I'll try to get a picture of the tank tomorrow. I still need to make new straps and find the support wedges that go on the crossmembers (they keep the tank from swinging into the drive shaft).

OK, check out my pictures.

The rusty tank is a spare tank I just got and it's in better shape rust wise than the clean tank seen in the other pictures. The inside of the clean tank looks as good as the outside...I'm very happy with the way it turned out.

That tank looks like a great idea, I actually thought about fabbing up a tank myself and doing something like that, didnt know that a suburban tank would fit that well. Your truck looks great as well, I have the same but not as far along as you. What did you use for a power steering setup if you dont mind me asking?

I have a power rack and pinion from Preformance Online that bolts to my stock front axle and uses a standard GM PS pump. I've added a Suburban sway bar and power disc brakes to the front also.

I'm still working on the gas tank filler neck set-up. It will most likely be put on the passenger side above the running board. As you can see in the pictures the tank neck will be below the bed floor, but the actual filler neck will need to be angled up so when I'm filling the tank gas doesn't burp out when the nozzle clicks off.
