I would like to replace the impaler on my 61 with a collapsible steering column but still fit the original steering wheel. I would appreciate any words of wisdom

dbo...welcome to the forum. I would check with the manufacturer of the column that you are planning on installing. Or are you going with a used unit from another truck? Although the collapsing column is not the most popular choice for these old trucks, most opt for a tilt....it is your truck and your build, so do what you want with it, enjoy it and have fun doing it. There are several companies that make adapters for the shafts and wheels, so I'm sure that you will be able to find one that will be compatible. And how about some pics of the old truck for the rest of us.

Thanks. This seems like a great site. I was thinking of pulling one from another truck. I'm not a big fan of the tilt columns but we'll figure something out. I'll post some pics soon. Me and the boys (16 and 12) have been getting it roadworthy for a while now with my dad who is a long since retired mechanic. We're having a lot of fun with it and it keeps them off video games. Great looking truck. I love the old stepsides. Its great that he can assist them with turning wrenches. Its an experience that they will never forget. My grandfather passed in Sept and he turned wrenches with me til he was 85. Theres values that you learn from our older generation that cannot be duplicated.

Welcome to the site. From the firewall, to the factory rag joint, there are steering column sections, that can be retro-fit, with a telescoping/collapsible feature, if you are concerned with the safety of your son. Also, since seatbelts were not mandatory, by the federal government, in trucks until 1966, you should invest in lap belts and/or shoulder belts for your son's safety, as well. This is a very common convenience/performance upgrade on these trucks.

Welcome to the site! I've been on here a few years and it has helped me immensely. Although I'm sure I will leave my steering column as is, I'm interested to see what you come up with. I have a 61 as well, except mine is a Fleetside. I will be putting in 3 point seatbelts eventually. I have a friend who is a medic, and he has told me some of the stuff he's seen regarding car crashes...I'd strongly suggest three point seatbelts. Turns out they are actually available for our trucks! I just haven't ordered them yet.

I am interested in the retrofit collapsible steering sections if you have any info you could send. I put in lap belts, but I like the idea of the 3 point belts too. I will have to post some pics of the boys working on the truck. It is pretty cool to have three generations working on it.

I also have a 61 Stepside. But I opted for a tilt wheel for a 82 pick up. Good luck. We like pics!

Awesome truck. Isn't that th one in the calander? Anyway, I like the way you handled the grill. Very cool, and thinking about doing the same.

I agree with 4-5-6 Chevy Trucks.This will be something remembered for years to come.My grandpa passed away 20+ years ago but can still remember all the good times we had in the shed workin on tractors(i was raised on a farm)He wasnt able to help due to health reasons but he was always there giving us advice.
