Does anyone know the inside rear wheel bearing number for a '48 2 ton? I'm running a Timken axle.

Hy bens48bigbolt, could you please tell us the series designation of your truck, rather than use the term "2 ton", this can cause the wrong part numbers to be supplied. On the two largest series trucks the rear wheel bearings are different.

My truck is a "Loadmaster"-RW-6400-Conventional.

I'm not sure Chev used a Timken axle in 1948. GMC, Ford did. You may have an axle that came out of another truck.

My axle is embossed with Timken #3838-J-15. I assume that means it's a Timken and there are several others in a local salvage yard just like mine.

super 55- Thanks for the link. I have that same shop manual. It's just that the numbers aren't the same.

ps. I have read somewhere that chevy did use Timken axles in some models. If mine isn't original there are others around that have been changed too.

Hy bens48bigbolt, okay if your wheels are the same front and rear I'll assume the rear axle is original. Using the page posted by Super55 I crossed the bearings over to Timken numbers. The original bearings were "barrel bearings", they have not been produced in years, they do make a straight tappered roller bearings to replace them, or you could check around for N.O.S. bearings made by Hyatt. The Timken number for the inner set is KD12051Z, I could not find pricing at RockAuto for the set, however the set breaks down into the components which comprise it
KD12051Z = 1 395CS Timken cone, and one 394CS Timken cup.
Timken 395CS is $26.99 at RockAuto
Timken 394CS is $18.91 at RockAuto
The outer bearing is set KB11786Y, no pricing as a set at RockAuto, However the components are priced
KB11786Y = 1 387 Timken cone, and one 382 Timken cup.
Timken 387 is $17.72 at RockAuto
Timken 382 is $11.41 at RockAuto
If you take it apart and give us whatever numbers you can find on the parts we can confirm that these are the parts to order, hope that helps.

Excellent information. I had heard comments of these bearings costing $300.00 to replace and up $1000 if they have to be made. That would scare me back to the salvage yard. As near as I could tell the number on my inner bearing (barrel type) is Hyatt 15020.
They are a little scuffed. I haven''t removed the cup yet. It looks OK.

This is a P.S.-Yes the wheels are all the same. 10 lug bolts on the rear and 5 lugs on the front with all wheels having 10 lug holes.
