Can a mechanical vacuum advance work intermittently or is it an all or nothing scenario?

spring and when the vacuum is removed and it rises back up to atmospheric pressure the spring pushes
it back to its stop.
If you mean by intermittent, can it operated in between full vacuum advance and no vacuum advance,
yes. I does operate anywhere in between depending on the strength of the vacuum signal.

If you have a hole in the diaphragm, the vacuum advance is not going to work at all. So it's an all or nothing scenario. The mechanical advance would still work however.
(Denny, just another interpretation of what the "intermittent" question might mean)

What I meant was, can it work... moving the distributor then not work, then work again under normal circumstances?

centrifugal mechanical advance.
