I've read that the older truck carburetors are sensitive to fuel pressure. I've got a truck that starts, but won't idle. Seems to be getting all it's fuel from the accelerator pump. I want to replace the fuel pump first. Actually, I'm going to be bypassing most of the original fuel system, with a Briggs and Stratton tank on the front fender and new rubber tubing, through a filter, down to the fuel pump inlet.

Now that I've explained all that, the real question is whether a replacement fuel pump might actually be in the 3 to 3.5 psi range without a regulator. I can't seem to find any regulators at all that cost less than $30.

If you get a replacement original pump you will be fine, no regulator needed.

If you want to eliminate your current fuel pump as the problem place your temporary fuel tank about a foot or more above the carb, it should run fine if that was the problem.

I am leaning toward a carb cleaning and rebuild, what you describe does not sound like a fuel pump problem.

Thanks, Grigg. I was kind of wondering. It doesn't appear to be the original carburetor, for one thing, and it isn't all there for another, but as long as I kept pumping the accelerator it would run.

I have two Rochester Bs laying around, one freshly rebuilt. I guess I'll just pop one on and get rid of that other carb, which I hadn't planned on keeping anyway.

I can hang the Briggs and Stratton tank from the inside of the hood until I figure out where the real problem is.

Update: I hung the Briggs and Stratton tank and it didn't run any better.

Pulled that carburetor and found out it is a Rochester Monojet (?)

Put on my fresh rebuilt Rochester B and got it to run, and idle, but the fan belt broke. That's turning into another story.

I had a hose run from the fuel pump outlet to a bucket on the front bumper to see if the fuel pump worked. After running for three to four minutes there was maybe a tablespoon in the bucket.

What's the best way to clean out the old 'behind the seat' tank? I've got a rebuilt fuel pump for it and will probably run it with rubber fuel lines for a little while. It isn't going far with no brakes, five tires and no charging system.

Man that Rochester gave you so much torque it broke the fanbelt!

There are threads about cleaning the tank. That is a big subject!
