The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot '60-'66 Trucks VIN decode help for a 1966.

I did my homework, but I still can't figure this one out.

Local salvage yard has a 1966 short bed fleetside. The VIN is C1436A158163.

According to the LMC catalog, the VIN should not have a 3 in the 4th position, but a 4 instead. You think it may have been the guys first day on the job and he grabbed the 3 instead of the 4?

Looks to me like a 1966 ShortWheelBase 1/2 ton 4x2 Cab and Chassis built in Atlanta.

I agree with your decode. But what I want to know is why is the 4th position a 3 and not a 4?

Most likely someone dropped a Fleetside bed on what was originally a Chassis Cab truck would be my guess.

I saw a guy selling a half ton short bed 4x4 with a k15 vin someone shortened the truck and stuck him with a non matching number. Beware these bones are out there!

I like your thinking, however this truck had the trim package on the doors and fleetside bed, so that makes me think the bed was on from the factory.

I can live with not knowing why there's a 3 instead of a 4 but since I am an information junkie, I thought I'd ask the forum.

VIN's are pretty sacred. I doubt GM would let a vehicle out of the factory incorrectly numbered..Compare the tag with the number on the frame.
Lots can happen in 40+ years,bedand trim could have even been installed at the original dealer.
