mando,

I can't help with the bed other than to say it looks like a chopped down van body. Could it have been a Wrecker at one time? Is there a wooden floor? Can we see at picture of the back of the truck?

Welcome to the Stovebolt! wave

That's some type of specialty bed. It's not homemade. I've seen a few like that before. Used to be one near me years ago, that came from a Metals Company.

Are there any signs that something could have been bolted to the floor or the back of the bed? Maybe it had a winch with a gin pole boom? Does the truck have a PTO? It looks a little like a power company line truck.

Whatever it is Chevrolet didn't build it...

Somewhat similar beds/equipment are shown in the Silver Books for Advance-Design trucks (47-55). Some names of conversion companies that made service bodies were: Morrison Steel Products, McCABE-POWERS Auto Body Company, and HERTHORNWAY Export Corporation

I think I've seen beds like those in vintage pictures from Hot Rod and the like. Perhaps some kind of support vehicle for auto racing?

Well, since my last name is McCabe....thought i would jump in here
I'm a california guy - central valley - my dad saw a picture of your truck (he farmed in Fresno - Bakersfield corridor...said it was probably a McCabe Coachworks body out of Oakland/Berkeley Calif shop. Probably used by oil companies around Bakersfield and the Elk Hills reserve for oil field services, he guessed hauling oil field pipe. But he cautioned just a guess as pictures were in shadows and hard to get close look at details.
