The stock steering gear has the shaft and the tube incorporated into it. You would have to cut both of them. You would need to leave enough of the shaft protruding from the steering gear to incorporate a flex joint or rag joint to match the later column. The stock tube also supports the shifter linkage for a 3 speed. If you have an auto trans or floor shifter then this doesn't matter. Another issue is the later column locks with the key switch so you would have to relocate your ignition circuit. You may also need some sort of support bracket on the lower end of the later column if it is not so equipped. Other than that, nothing to it. Fred

NEVER, EVER, TRUST A WELD ON A STEERING SHAFT! If you're going to install a rag joint or some other type of flexible coupling or universal joint, make sure there's some kind of positive drive on both the upper and lower shaft, a Woodruff key, a spline, a double-D coupling, or at least a cross-drilled shaft with a roll pin, etc. Betting your life on anybody's welding job is a really foolish choice! I bobed the original steering column and milled the shaft flat on 2 sides, it now slides into the end of the 94 column. I secured the two with a #8 bolt and lock nut. I used the original column mount on the dash, used longer beefer bolts and milled the mount a little wider to fit the column. Didn't have to remove much metal. Every thing fits right and steering is about the same. I'm going to bob the shifter short and use the column lock and every thing else on the column. Jerry, I was told buy every one I know not to do that weld, good advise. Jerry YUP you got that right. Found a weld on my 52 steering shaft, looked like a glob of chewing gum. Entire column was yanked and a new Flaming River one installed. | | |
