My motor runs quite well and the system has been converted to 12v.I Just installed a pertronics module and wanted to check the timing, I have a quality timing lite which flashes at the correct time. I re-painted the ball in the fly wheel and still can't see the match-up between the pointer and the ball. any help out there?

I don’t have allot of experience timing a 235. But I do have allot of experience having problems timing a 235.

I have a 54 car 235 in my 50, 12 volt, pertronix. When I first tried to time it I could not locate the ball.

The manual for my year states to set the octane sensor to "0" and lock it down.
Loosen the distributor collar clamp. and turn distributor until ball lines up with pointer then tighten clamp.

I painted 2 arrows on the flywheel so I could determine which way to turn the distributor.

I had the Vacuum advanced disconnected. I could not find that in the manual but was suggested here in the forum.

After I timed it to the ball, I set the idle(450rpm for me), Adjusted the Carb mixture screw to max vacuum reading on gauge. Then Advanced the timing. I can’t recall how advanced I am but I don’t have ping or detonation

Hopefully the more experienced bolters will be along with additional tips. Or corrections

Good Luck

Thanks, thats just about what I'm doing. My problem is trying to see past the starter into the "hole" and line up the ball and pointer all while looking thru bi-focals

It's a lot simpler to set the timing with the engine stopped, then check it with a good, very bright timing light. Align the pointer and ball by turning the engine by hand, then turn the distributor clockwise until the points close. Turn the ignition switch to the "on" position, and touch a test light with the clip attached to a good ground to the (-) terminal of the coil. Turn the distributor CCW until the light comes on. The timing is set- - - -lock the adjustment down and crank the engine up. You can check your work with a timing light if you choose, but it's not really necessary. Minor adjustments up to about +/- 5 degrees can be made with the octane selector.

Edit: OOPS! Just noticed you've got a Pertronix- - - -no help there on the static timing! Just another good reason to stay FAR away from that system!
