Hello, I recently replaced my wiring harness with a reproduction kit from Classic Parts. I followed all directions, but I'm not sure if the starting circuit is correct. When I push the stomp starter, the motor will turn over, even if the key is in the off position. However, it will only start in the on position, and the off position will stop the motor. Is the starter supposed to engage without the key?

Thanks, Vince

The stomp starter is always "hot" on my '54. The '59 wiring diagram is not available on line. The '54 diagram shows:
> (+) batt to the stomp starter.
> Stomp starter to starter motor.
> Starter motor to ground.

No "on-off" switch to the stomp starter.

yes, the starter engages anytime you push the pedal

the 59 wiring is the same as shown in the 55 diagram - you'll also find it in the shop manual [55-58, not the 59 supplement]

I'ts normal. It would do it with NO wiring harness, just postivie cable to starter & ground to engine. When you push the foot pedal you are in effect the starter solenoid. You move the starter drive into mesh with the flywheel and depress the starer switch button closing the contacts causing engine to crank. Now if you add power to the coil, away you go.

I remember that well, had to push the family Pontiac (1952) because Dad forgot to turn the key. The engine was turning over but not firing.
