Hey guys got my bolt ready for dual exhaust. Mechanic said I shouldn't drive it without pipes or I might burn my exhaust valves. What do you guys think. I do have quite a drive, about 40 mins.

Also I am thinking of routing them both out behind the drivers rear wheel, what do you guys think?

As long as you don't hammer on it hard, you'll be ok. Keep it nice, slow and easy. Behind the driver's wheel will be fine, just have it far enough beck to keep the heat off the tire, say about 6" or so away at least. Maybe run them on an angle and baloney cut the tips to match, like an old Trans-Am.

Completely without exhaust pipes? 40 minutes! I personally wouldn't dump from the exhaust manifolds.....too much potential for heat and health problems for both you and your truck! I don't want to open a can of worms but I'd be leery of trying it without at least some exhaust pipes to dump under the truck and protect the valves from rapid cooling once you shut down the engine. You could slap on some "Mickey Mouse" hearing protectors and forego the oxygen tank!!!

I ran mine straight back and out behind, under the bumper. If you're going to run glaspaks it may be a bit loud out the side with your window down. I switched over to the CherryBomb Turbos which are much more civilized in that 2300+ range where the paks were just plain offensive. However, this is your personal call. That's the beauty of these old trucks.....you can always make changes to suit your needs.

The health issues alone would be enough for me to not do this but I also have heard that you can warp the exhaust valves this way.

But, another issue is the noise. 40 minutes with open headers? Do you have a "get out of jail free card"? I think every cop within 5 miles will be attracted to this caper.

The noise & fire danger would be too much. The muffler shop I use is only a mile away & I haul em there. I like real long glasspacks straight out behind the bumper. Sounds good & looks cool.

I'm going to change my answer on this, I'll agree with the others. I was assuming that you at least had head pipes on it. If there's nothing at all, just the manifolds, trailoring would be better.

When I installed my Fentons I drove about 4 miles to the exhaust shop - no pipes or muffler. It wasn't really that loud unless I got over 1500 rpm which really wasn't necessary. But I did anyway grin It pretty much sounds like two louda$$ Harleys driving next to eachother. Definatley no damage - 5k miles since at 17mpg ave. (mostly in-city) with a heavy foot.
P.S. I routed mine straight out the back to keep it quieter in the cab and to keep the tailgaiters at bay!

Done a bunch, never had a valve problem-my exhaust guy is 22 miles away. Make sure nothign will burn near the exit of the manifolds. I drove old black truck for months w/only a 3 ft piece coming off the engine-nothing else. Never even got a second look. Not sure what you gotta do to get pulled over around here, it sure ain't speeding or no brake lights/tailights/exhaust or driving on the wrong side of the road.

Got her done! Trailered her there. Ran pipes both on drivers side, dumping out behind rear wheel. Looks Great, and sounds good too. Installed glass packs. Went to a large cruise next day, and she got a lot of looks!
