Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 112 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2011 Posts: 112 | So I've pulled out the seatbelts in addition to the seat because they were annoying me, applied dish soap to the grommet and fuel filler neck...and STILL can't get the neck through the grommet! I'm a little perturbed.
It appears to me to be an angle-of-attack issue. Does anyone have any tips for twisting or turning the tank a certain way to push the neck through in my '69 C-10? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 324 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 324 | Soap is a good Idea. Also what about warming it up, with a hair dryer to make a little more pliable? Sometimes stuff like this works and sometimes it doesn't. Especially if the grommet is old and hardened over time. If it doesn't work, what about cutting off the original and replacing it with a new aftermarket one? Just food for thought. Hope this helps. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,378 Ex Hall Monitor | | Ex Hall Monitor Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,378 | If I'm understanding the problem correctly the grommet is already in the opening and you're trying to shove the neck through it? If so try it the other way. Put the tank in place and push the grommet over it. With the grommet already in place the rolled lip at the end of the neck may simply be too big to shove through the existing space with the body metal not allowing the grommet to expand enough to allow the passage. I put the grommet on my '38 this way with no issues.

I can't imagine getting it installed with the tank in place, but I'll try! | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,378 Ex Hall Monitor | | Ex Hall Monitor Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,378 | Undoubtedly it's different from my '38 but it's something to try since the way you've been doing it isn't working. Good luck.

There is a sweet spot you must hit to get it in. We used Astroglide. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 | I had the same problem on mine with a new grom, met. I used a lot of vocabulary. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 698 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 698 | I put both on mine on from the outside after the tank was installed. A little synthetic grease on the filler neck and a little on the body. Using a small flat blade screw driver they went right on. Then just wiped off the excess and followed up with a soap and water wash. I don't think either one took more than 5 or 6 minutes.

When I replaced a driveshaft carrier bushing, I intially tried a liquid dish detergent and had the same problem. When I changed to a plain old bar of hand soap it slid right in.

I then worked on the filler neck grommet from the outside slowly and patiently. After about 15 minutes, it was done and eaier than I thought. Bolting down the aftermarket tank was another story! | | |
