Hello All,
This is my first post and from what I have seen so far I'm pretty sure this is going to be a real easy question for the Newbie. I just bought my first old truck and just like many of my other old car projects the "fun" started right out of the gate. This one is a 63 Panel Van that has been reworked several times with little original left but the body and frame. The guy I bought it from had it shipped from Utah to Florida but never transferred the title. No real big issue there since he is around and we can do a double transfer. The kicker is since the title is out of state DMV wants a VIN verification and I have searched everywhere I can think of but can't find anything. I know I'm looking at a 48 year old chunk of iron but the rust is minimal and things are fairly clean but I have had no joy on this quest. No partial numbers, no tags, no anything.... My old car experiences with Chevelles I have always been able to find something but this truck has me stumped so how about a little help for the new guy.

I was stumped as well when I bought my truck 2 weeks ago. A quick google search while I was out looking at the truck led me to the driver side door jamb.

I think that anything there has been painted and sanded several times so I am hoping for something less accessible. I have looked in the places I have found them on cars [Frame rails, fire wall] but no luck.

The vin is on the door jam spot welded in, it is a tag that was stamped made of stainless steel. This is the only place the vin is located on these early model of trucks.

oh than this is not a good thing since there didn't look to be anything spot welded on the door jam. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will have just been skim coated over with bondo and not ground smooth or off.

Open the driver's door then look straight up at the jam just below the roof. If there is not a tag there, you have troubles.

I have seen them on the driver side A-pillar door jamb, B-pillar door jamb and the upper driver side door jamb. As stated above, these are the only factory locations of the VIN tag on the '60-'66 Chevy trucks, Panels & Suburban Carryalls.

The Utah title seems to be good however the guy I bought it from never went in and had it transferred into his name with a Florida title. He was working on it but then his wife got sick and stayed sick for a couple of years before she passed. The truck just sat and now he is in a bind and had to sell. I don't think he is trying to pull a fast one he just got dealt a raw deal.

I think I also have it stamped on the top of the frame rail on the driver's side by the steering gear box. This is on a '65 C10. I'll look when I get home tonight.

Only the last 8 characters of the 12 character VIN will be found on the Chevy truck frame rail...no characters of the VIN are on the GMC truck frame rail.

The VIN number should be on the UT title. Get a notorized bill of sale from the old owner in UT to the the guy you purchased it from. Then he and you go to DMV and they title first in his name. Then he pays the extra $10 for an imediate title and he signs it over to you right there in front of the clerk. It's just that simple. If they are asking you to prove the VIN number, go to a different office - it's not required.
