First whines pretty loud (I know there is not why to explain how loud), second is about half as loud, and third is quiet - is this normal? I have always thought it was until someone pointed out to me to tell me that they thought it wasn’t. I have clean fluid and it shifts well.

#79963 07/12/2007 8:33 PM | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,771 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,771 | There will be some gear noise in the reduced-speed gears (1/2/Rev.) but if it's really sounding off, it sounds like the needle bearings on the cluster gear are gone. Even though the cluster gear turns all the time, if it's not transmitting power, it will run quiet. Anytime power is moving from the input shaft, through the cluster gear, and back to the output shaft through 1st. or 2nd. gear, the cluster gear bearings will be loaded. If they're damaged or a few needle bearings are missing, they will be noisy.

A little noise in the lower gears is normal in those but if it is excessive you have a bad brg. I usually find it,s the front drive brg. It can be inspected & replaced without tearing down the trans. Pull the front retainer, spray a little brakecleener on it & with a strong light inspect the inner & outer races & the balls for any pits or scoreing.

It's a good idea to replace that one while he's got the tranny torn down, along with all the other small parts, though.

I am not even a shade-tree mechanic, more like a small bush mechanic - so my best bet is to have it gone through once and for all.
I am sorry that I don’t have have pic’s yet posted. I have read here for 5 years waiting for the truck to get painted. Will do that soon.
