I was hoping this could be for a two-speed rear, but can't get it to move. It's out of the '58 Chevy 40 Series Viking which was only a-ton-and-a-half... not normally equipped as such to my knowledge.

I'll probably have to pull it apart, but thought someone here might be able to educate me about what it is.

Not a 2 speed, just the standard single speed diff.

That is an adjuster for a block that goes on the side of the ring gear to prevent movement under high torque conditions. It was discussed recently in a post. I wouldn,t move it unless you have o-hauled the diff.
