I have 58 3600. Runs ok when I have the choke on but even when it is warmed up and I push the choke in to turn it off the truck stalls. Does that mean 1.the carb idle needs to be adjusted. or 2 the thermostat is sticky or not working

Could mean a lot.
1: Idle screw could just be set way to low.
2: If you have a fuel filter in may be clogged.
3: Fuel pump pressure could be low and the vacuum of the engine in sucking the fuel in.
4: May be a clogged line or a crake in the line.
5: carb could be sucking in air or have a leak.

Question? What engine are you running and what carb? If your not sure post a photo. The folks around here can identify it and help you out.

Its a 235 with a plain old carb. I'll have to get a camera and and figure out how to post a photo. Dont know if Ihave a fuel filter. I suspect not as it is all pretty orig

3. You might have a vacuum leak.

I'd test for a vacuum leak using propane gas as described here.

If it passes the vacuum test, I would then look for trash in the main metering jet. If it is trash in the main jet, quite often you can rev the engine up and then put your hand on top of the carb. Sometimes this will suck the trash on through. I have also removed the top of the carb and sucked the trash out with an eyedropper. If all of this fails to fix it and you are sure you don't have a vacuum leak, you probably need to get the carb rebuilt.

Check for vacuum leaks / intake ports. Rebuilding the carb may also resolve your problem.

I noticed the fuel pump was covered in fuel and/or oil. I cleaned it all off. There were about screws that I tightened down about 1/8th of turn. Then I noticed there was a 1/4 inch hose about 5" long which went from the bottom of the fuel pump to the middle of the pump. It was not even on the middle section. I cleaned everything, put the hose back on and had already turned the idle screw up. It seems to be ok now.
