I agree with everyone else regarding the die grinder and 1/32 cut-off wheels. It's the best way. I would cut on the fender side not the cowl side. The cut is going to remove material and it may be uneven since it is free-hand.
Good luck, go slow and steady. I would recommend a few pactice runs through some 18-gauge sheet metal to get the feel.

Just a suggestion. I was wondering if maybe you held a piece of sheet metal between the side of the box, or cab & the cutting wheel and move it along as a shield to minimize the cutter & grind marks. Could save a lot of body work later. Part of my left rear fender had been welded on and this seemed to work well for me. Just as a word of caution, not all of the cut off discs carried by the big box stores have a high enough RPM rating for some of the higher RPM cut off/die grinders. Be sure to observe the RPM rating of the wheels you buy are adequate for your die grinder, lest they become a flying projectile. Additionally, the cheaper cut off discs typically put more particulate in the air, quicker. My personal experience has been that the more expensive name brand discs carried by my local welding supply and rated for cutting stainless steel, will put less particulate in the air and make up any price difference with their longer abrasive life. Now lets talk about breathing protection. The throw away dust masks are about only good for fogging up your safety glasses.
