I believe that I have 235 chev 6 and it has a oil bath filter on the carb. Can this be cleaned with gas and if so how. I don't know what kind of material this is made out of.

You should be able to. If you clean it and it falls to peices then it should be replaced any how. Can you post a photo So I can tell you for sure. Down want to give you bad advise.

I'd clean it with kerosene or stoddard solvent instead of gasoline.

Using gasoline for cleaning is very dangerous. Purchase a parts degreaser.
