The result is that the bores are about 10,000 over standard at the top and needs to be bored - needing oversize pistons. He's suggesting I replace the cast iron with aluminum. Is this a good idea? Does it affect the truck after it's rebuilt in that it's no longer all original?

Aluminum pistons are much better for your engine.
