For helping keep this great

on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2002 Posts: 153 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2002 Posts: 153 | The beltline on the back of my cab is rusted out in several places. These cabs were built in multiple pieces and each has a "c" shape overlap that becomes the beltline. The roof piece overlaps on top of the back piece of the cab.
When I patch the cab does it still need to be two overlapping pieces so it can flex or move? Why can't I fabricate a beltline bump and weld in as a one piece repair?
Clear as mud? Truck has been painted for over 5 years now and there are no signs of belt line moving or slipping within itself, so I don't know how much movement really happens in that joint ? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 201 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 201 | The joint is there due (educated guess not original knowledge) to having to form the sheet metal in several pieces. I see no reason you couldn't make the patch as you described. If you're a good welder and body man, why not go ahead and seam weld the whole joint? I made sure they put a good fill of seam sealer on mine before paint.

Welding sheet metal is difficult for me but I think I have too much rust to ignore. I don't have the patience to let things cool and I get warped areas.
