I found a site that suggested some parts to use for this conversion. Has anyone looked at this and have some opinion on its level of correctness?

http://www.how-to-build-hotrods.com/6v-to-12v.html

I would like to try the conversion that does not require the ballast resistor. I understand the lights and gauge portion of the change over, I am still fuzzy on the ignition system.

If your using a points type distributor you can use an internal resister coil and omit the ballast resister but most are going to electronic for better starting and running. Pertronics has an electronic conversion kit that lets you keep you old distributor or many use the GM HEI if your engine is a GM. On an HEI be sure to run a 12g wire from the switch to the dizzy. Many use the factory 16g wire and wonder why modules have a short life. Both the HEI and Pertronics have a proven record over many years.

Thanks Evan,
I didn't realize people were upgrading their ignition systems. I was planning on using the old system while I worked on other stuff.
That is something to keep in mind for the future.

You can use your stock ignition and get along fine. Use a NAPA coil IC64 that has the internal ballast resistor, and get a Runtz for your fuel gauge and a HD heater resister from Fifth Avenue and life should be pretty good. You do not need to change anything inside of the distributor....I wrote a book many years ago called "The official 6/12 Conversion Guide" which would help you. It explains what you need to do and why. It is $10.00 post paid. thanks Randy

As for the correctness of that 6/12 conversion link it looks to be about 50 percent accurate. Most of it is information that was around during the 1960's and early 70's and is no longer current....thanks Randy

Thanks Randy,

The coil with the internal resistor is all I need for now I think. The original gas tank and fuel level sender are no good anyway so I'm planning on getting the motor started out of a can after I get the ignition wired.
