For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Well I dint want to scratch up my newly painted front fenders and the only thing that I had for a fender cover was the old cloth fender cover that I’ve had from the late 50’s So I went on a search to day and ended up at the local NAPA store. Out of the three the NAPA professional looked like the best made one and it was only a few bucks more than the $16 cheaper one. http://www.pbase.com/dennygraham/image/138758159 I got it home and cut all the cardboard and wrapping paper away only to find out its just 15x34. Now for an AD fender you need at least 24 inches in width and 34 really doesn’t cover the headlight end of the fender. To late to bring it back now cuz the wrapping is in the garbage and it‘s my fault, I should have measured it before I unwrapped it. Never dawned on me that they would come in Poppa, Mama and Baby sizes!!!! So I went looking at the truck vendors, wouldn‘t you think that a store specializing in fat fenders would be aware that the AD trucks would need an oversized cover, I guess not cuz all I could find were the small ones that fit the Vettes and Camaros and there taint no sizes listed, I wonder why!!!! Now the question is, who’s found the solution to this, besides using the blue Navy blanket off the spare bed? Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

If you have a local driver/dealer maybe he can help you.

(I use them for holding my work piece when I use a handheld router.) Put a carpet remnant or beach towel on top of it. It will keep it from sliding off the fender. They are cheap. (Disposable if dirty so you don't scratch your paint.) If you use a towel, it can be washed. If you can find some it works great. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,963 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,963 | I used to use old flannel sheets. They can be folded to the size you need. I also have some packing quilts that furniture movers use. A bedbug hauler theft them at one of our gas stations years ago. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Tim, there must be one of those HF stores that sucks you in as you drive home after school. I've bought one of those HF mover's blankets, a couple of years ago when my daughter was moving from apartment to apartment in the city. I ended up using those Navy blankets for her furniture instead and never used the movers blanket. because it seemed like the edging or thread was kind of scratchy feeling and might be tough on a smooth polished finish.
A couple of things the commercial fender pads have going for them is that they use a closed cell foam sheet with a skin that won't pick up grit. Also all of them that I've looked at had a row of magnets sewn into one edge which kept them from sliding off the fender. All the carpet pads I’ve seen, because they are typically a coarse open cell foam, tend to pick up small stones and other grit if they fall on the floor.
The reason I jokingly mentioned the Blue Navy blankets is because that sort of material is like a polishing cloth and tends to just slip off the fender just about the time you have a heavy greasy starter about one half thread away from falling out of the bell housing. And the same problem would apply to beach towels, flannel sheets, or shirts, comforters, chair throws, etc.
I found one guy online in Canada that makes fender covers in a couple of large sizes for those vintage 30's and 40's cars with the fat fenders and seven foot long hoods. He also custom makes covers, the only problem is he has a lousy site for his product and there isn't any information on pricing or how to order from him. And when I see the word "custom" it's always followed by the word "$". So anyway, that lousy site design tells me a lot about his business and how his product would be made also.
As common as the AD is, I was really surprised that none of the vendors offered an It’s a good thing I got into collecting all those heavy Singer sewing machines a few years boversized "fender cover" ready made for that series truck.
Well, here I go again, off on another tangent that will pull me away from actually getting any work done on the truck. But I guess if I want to find what I have pictured in my mind I'll have to go in search for a supplier of closed foam sheet with a skin and a handful of button magnets and make a couple my self.
ack. But first I'll have to get one of them working good enough to edge the foam, which means another month away from truck work. By then the snow will be flying and It’ll be time for me to head down to the basement for winter work.
This "Gotta make it your self if you want it done right" disease is really a burden at times, I’ve been looking for a cure for some time but so far the only medicine that appears to help is "big bucks", and I can't seem to come up with a big enough dose of that to make a difference. Now that I've wasted the whole morning with another of my novels, I snuck out to the barn with the ruler and that 24" width actually would cover most of the fender. Now, if they only had the magnets sewn in the edged like the NAPA one had I just might order a pair.

The rubber backing holds the mat from slipping and dosen't pick up pepples so it won't scratch the finish. Plus they are machine washable. So when the wife is not looking, I throw them in the wash and they are like new again.

It'll be in the camping aisle. They are on the thick side, ~3/8" thick, approx 30" wide x 48" long. ...or look at that non-slip rug pad I mentioned. And Denny, looking at pictures of your beautiful truck, I seriously doubt you'll EVER have a "greasy starter" to contend with.
