I'm new to stovebolt so I hope this is the correct location to pose this question, I'm rebuilding a 248 from my 56, I am thinking about a mild cam, small 4bl carb and headers. Any thoughts or sugestions would be great.

Since you aren't keeping it original, why not rebuild a 270 or 302? Either will bolt right in.
