I have found it is easier to lube them in place being they are mounted so you can push and pull the cable easier, I use kroll oil or marvolus mystry oil, unhook the choke from the carb, soak it all down let it set for a day or two then go wear your arm out pushing and pulling, if you still want to remove it though it is (mine anyway) put on with a nut on the back that you have the feed the cable through, and some have a stabliser mount on the firewall.

There's a nut on the back side. Unhook the cable from the carb, loosen the nut and pull it from the dash,

Thanks guys but getting at that nut is easier said than done. I wonder if I could just gently pull the gauge panel out and let it hang and then reach around that way? what do you think?

To pull the guages out, you have to disconnect the speedo, and intermediate harness....alot more work than one nut on the choke cable if you ask me. I lay on the floorboard and use a box end wrench, take you 2 min and the choke cable will be out. Like 48BIGTRUCKS said, disconnect from the carb first.
