Help; I installed a cigarette lighter unit to my 36 pickup so as to use a GPS and the GPS will not power up. My voltage meter shows 12.5 volts, so I got out the voltage tester and the tester bulb shows up in red. I thought perhaps I wasn't getting a good ground so I ground to the starter, the motor and the frame and still will not show green. I tested my other cars and they show up in green. so whats the problem? I know the GPS is good because it works in my other cars, Help!!! THanks;...Richartd

Since you say the voltage meter shows 12.5 volts I'm making the assumption you've converted to 12v. Is the 12.5v showing in the lighter socket? That's the implication but it makes no sense for voltage meter to show 12.5 and a test light show bad unless the tests were done at different spots.

If the voltage is there, polarity is correct, and socket housing is truly grounded, then I'd look for a contact problem. Is the aftermarket (I assume) socket too deep? How about socket is too large in diameter for the plug in. Try this, Take the cigar lighter from your working other car and try it in the suspect socket. Does it work?
