The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop window rolls down on its own

The passenger window on my 54 chevy truck doesn't stay up on bumpy roads. The window works fine, doesn't skip or fall,just slowly rolls down on rough road. Any way to eliminate this?

Check the position of your crank handle in the up position. Is it where gravity and vibration pulls it down which is in the crank-the-window-down direction? In other words if you have to crank the handle counter clock wise to lower the window AND the full up position of the handle is anywhere from 7 to 11 o'clock, gravity and road vibration can cause the crank handle to turn which allows the window to drop a bit. If the handle is in a 1 to 6 o'clock position with the window up, gravity and vibration will help keep it closed. If your window open by turning the handle clockwise just reverse the procedure. Back in the day when I was a body man I fixed a LOT of that exact problem with a simple repositioning of the handle.

I'm going to have to give that a try. The handle right now is in the two o'clock position when closed. I'll drop it to the four or five position and see what happens. Thanks!

Could it be that your window regulator spring is broken???

I wouldn’t think that the weight of the handle would be enough to compensate for the weight of
the window, frame, channel and regulator arms.
I realize that we would all like to find an easy way out but the truth of the matter is that most
of the time the only way to fix a problem like this is to repair or replace the loose, worn
or missing part that’s causing the situation.

It does seem counter intuitive but it works in most cases. I was shown that trick by an old mechanic when I was fresh out of trade school.
